AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach.  They train 70,000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap, so they can prepare all students for college, careers, and life.  When schools partner with AVID, they receive professional development, a suite of resources, and ongoing support to ensure a lasting impact that maximizes their return on investment. AVID is not “one more thing to do”—our work with schools aligns with their goals to accelerate and enhance the work that is already happening.

Earlier this year, SIS/SMS was awarded the status of "Certified AVID Site". What does this mean? The school's AVID site coordinator explained it like this:

"As a Site Team we score ourselves on AVID's Coaching and Certification tool, this includes more than 70 indicators (SMS) and 40 indicators (SIS).  These indicators are structured around four key Domains of operations: Instruction, Systems, Leadership, and Culture.  The evidence we collected at our sites this year proved to meet AVID's rigorous implementation requirements so we are now considered an "AVID Certified Site".  Additionally, AVID Center was so impressed with Stayton Intermediate School's implementation in their first year (2017-2018) they made us an "AVID Showcase School".  This is an honor only one other school in the United States has been awarded in the first year of implementation.  We look forward to hosting the two showcases we have on the calendar for this year."
